I can not really answer that question, as woodworking is such a varied hobby. Do you want to turn wood, do scroll sawing, furniture making. You first need to decide what you want to make. From there start to buy the basic tools you need to do this.

Also are you wanting to learn the art of hand tools or are you going to want power tools. You also have to think where you are going have your shop and the limitations of space etc.

example;
If you just wanted to do scroll saw or fret work then choose your scroll saw, maybe a small drill press and maybe a small mouse sander etc..

But if you are wanting to make furniture then well that is a whole different kettle of fish.
