Bandsaw

I have what is classed as a 14inch Band saw which means it is big enough to do a bit of re-sawing but yet small enough to cut fancy shapes without a problem.

  • Max cutting width 335 mm – 13.2 inches
  • Max cutting depth 200 mm – 7.8 inches
  • Wheel Diameter 350 mm – 13.8 Inches
  • Band Length 2490 mm – 948.5 inches
  • Motor Wattage 750w
  • Voltage 230v
  • Size 1680mm H 710mm W 560 D
  • Table size 595mm W 500mm D
  • Table height 1000mm
  • Net weight 85 kg

This bandsaw is ideal for the serious woodworker and light industry, it features a cast aluminum ripping fence with quick locking which locks front and back for greater accuracy.

A tilting table is also featured with a graduated degree scale behind it which is lockable front and back for greater accuracy, This saw features bearing mounted single piece cast wheels with in and out adjustment to track the blade.

Also in included are bearing blade guides top and bottom for pin point accuracy when cutting.

Down the bottom there’s a 100mm dust extraction port to keep the sawdust away from the wheels. A two speed facility which enables it to do 1400 and 1700rpm allowing you to select the best speed for your material.

I have used on various projects now and love it. It is a great bandsaw and it is easy to setup and use, the bearing blade wheels for tracking are good and easy enough to adjust. Overall worth it. I am glad I did not go for the smaller brother. I have to admit though I need to get a few more blades as I only have a 1/4inch 12tpi for tight ish work and a 1/2 8tpi blade for re-sawing but need a few others

Bandsaw Upgrade

In April 2021 I decided to upgrade the mitre gauge and fence on my bandsaw with the Kreg Precision Mitre Gauge System and Kreg Precision Bandsaw Fence.

Table Saw

  • Maximum cutting width 620mm
  • Maximum cutting depth at 90 degree 85mm
  • Blade size 255mm tungsten tipped (16mm arbor)
  • Motor size 3 hp single phase
  • Voltage 230 v
  • Size 940mm H (top of table ) 1460mm W, 1200mm D
  • Net Weight 95 kg

Add on’s Upgrades

As you can see from the photo I only have room to put the table saw in an undeveloped part of the basement. And the sad part is this just as you walk in the door. Whilst it does not look stable it actually is very stable and actually level which surprised me… lol

This saw is a jump up from my last small DIY Table saw from Tooline. The rip fence is a lot better and has no movement once locked into place. I have been able to get it set up reasonably well and have no major complaints about the quality of the saw… its a table saw and it has a spinning blade and cuts wood…

However; there are few things I don’t like about it.

  • My main gripe I have, and one issue though, is the riving knife it is a comblesome setup and it does not lower with the blade. It is attached with 2 bolts on the rear (aft of the rear rail, and one bolt in the blade assemble housing. The guard gets in the way of 90 percent of the cuts I do, and taking off to use the sleds and various cuts is just painful.
However I do use it when I have to do a LONG RIP CUT. I have been using table saws since I was knee high to a grass hopper, and use a table saw every day at work… and therefore know when and where I can and can not get away with the riving knife. However please if your table saw has a riving knife that lowers with the blade, use it. Just because you see me not using it is no reason for you to think it is a good idea, I know the risks and know when and I can and can not get away with it.
  • I can not take a dado stack which is the only thing I wish it could do. But that was not a deal breaker as there are other ways to make dado’s.
  • The fine tune adjustment knob thingy is not the best … it works just not the best.

The Dado stack I have a work around using sleds, or router etc. The fine tune adjustment I never used anyway… the main gripe was the riving knife. Saying all that I am happy with the saw for what it is. I can not fit a full size cabinet saw in the the space but I am looking at upgrading to a Hybrid saw.

I am not sure if the The Toolshed sell this saw any more, as I can not find it on their website.

Update
Since early February 2019, I actually broke the handle on my rip fence. I had been looking at upgrading to Biesemeyer Style fence, so that just encouraged me to actually part with the money. If you want to see me installing it click here.

June 2020
With the new Biesemeyer Style fence installed, (setup and tuned in), Incra Mitre Gauge,  and Incra sled as well as the jigs and with sleds the saw is still very usable… just the riving knife.

Main Work Bench

My main work bench is small however I make it work in my space. I bought it from Mitre 10 Mega. People ask why I didn't just make one however there comes a time when time and money come into play. I doubt that I could have got the wood and hardware bits as cheap as I did for this kit. Yes I also know it is very cheap… which means I also know parts of it are not the best like the vice, draw slides could be better and odd size dog holes. That being said why did I buy it?

I saw one made up in Mitre 10 and gave it a good looking over. It was pretty stable, and well made for the price of only $350.00 NZD to me that was cheap. It was cheap but it wasn’t too nasty. So I decided to purchase one. Mitre10 Jobmate Kitset Workbench. There is a difference between cheap and nasty and just cheap.

Multi-use workbench, made from solid rubberwood timber. Suitable for all DIY enthusiasts and professional workshops.
  • Includes three drawers and one storage shelf
  • Easy to assemble kit set with all fastenings
  • Vice opening 185mm.Measurements: H: 865mm, W: 1525mm, D: 510mm

While they recommend having some one to help you put it together it is entirely possible to do it on your own as I did but I didn’t do it in the recommend way the instructions say. I also assembled it in cramped conditions adding that extra layer of difficulty, but definitely possible to do on your own.

Once everything is tightened up the bench itself is surprisingly pretty sturdy. However for me it is a little low, but that is not a problem to sit it up on some leg extension blocks.

The Dog holes appear to be 15mm instead of the average19mm which I can fix and I just buy new size dogs and accessories. (that being said there is no standard size dog… but it is more of an average.)

Like I said above the draw slides are not the best but they work and I possibly could change them in the future if I really want nice sliding draws etc. But to be completely honest I probably won’t ever get round to it.

The end vise is not the best (and this is where they really skimped on the money) but will it will do the job? … most likely will b able to handle what I throw at it (I am not sure if I can change out the vice or some how install a better one on the other end.

So am I happy with it, time will tell how well it will hope up to mu abuse, but for $350.00 NZD it is not a bad deal and so far it is okay. but just don’t expect the best vice, or draw pulls etc.

Disc & Belt Sander

This Belt and Disc sander has been one of our great finds!

Important features to look for when buying a Belt a Disc sander are -

What the bed under the belt is made of!
In this case it is a cast iron ground bed which has the ability to stay straight and true with great wearing capabilities.

Construction and power of the motor! The powerful 1 hp motor that runs this sander is cast iron cased which is excellent for keeping it cool and will last a long time.

A good strong base to avoid warping and twisting is also important. In this case the unit is bolted to a cast iron base which takes care of this problem. The machine is then bolted to a pressed metal fabricated base which has been powder coated to prevent it rusting.

It comes complete with a stop to sand against on the belt and an adjustable side table that can be fitted for use with the disc or the belt when in the vertical position. The side table comes complete with and adjustable mitre guide.

Sanding belts and discs are now directly imported by the ToolShed. Check out the amazing deals we can do by missing out middle margins.

Jointer

Portable 8″ Planner/Jointer. It doesn’t do too bad of a job on the planning considering it is only a cheap DIY thing. But I have no space for a full sized one… you just shift the dust extraction port to on top of the planner/jointer bed (which pushes in a switch) and you have and 8″ thicknesser.

This all-in-one planer and thicknesser offers two great tools without taking up lots of space and is a must have for any wood worker or home workshop. The planer is located on the top table and is capable of planing from 0mm - 3mm. It features an adjustable blade guard which can be raised, lowered, or slid in and out to keep your workpiece running straight. The thicknesser is located below and can handle workpieces with a thickness ranging from 5mm - 120mm. It features a table that can be raised and lowered along with a gauge that lets you see the thickness of your material after each pass through. This machine comes with a dust extraction port that also works as a safety switch - the location of it changes depending on whether you are using the planer or thicknesser and the machine will not run without it installed. An emergency stop button is fitted for added safety while you work.

Router Table

Router table.

This Deluxe, free-standing Phenolic Resin Router table features a SOLID Phenolic core, and a hard wearing and low friction surface laminate. This is not to be confused with MDF/Phenolic Table, that have a basic MDF substrate and thin Phenolic coating. Machined and exposed MDF, regradless of chemical treatment, can be affected by moisture, humidity, dry, heat and other such damage. Phenolic resin is heavier, harder and, simply better (only to be out-classed by our own Cast Iron offering)

Pre milled and drilled and tapped to fit the Pro Router Stand, and will accept the supplied Aluminium Router Mounting Plate, but also our optional "Lift N Lock" Universal Router Lift. Our Pro Router Table Fence is manufactured from a single piece of aluminium extrusion and includes a 63mm dust port for efficient extraction from above the table. Also includes a remote mount NVR (No Volt Release), ON/OFF switch for your router.

The top and front feature T slots which allow the fitting of other jigs and accessories including the included transparent guard. The fence assembly also includes adjustable side scales for setting fence alignment and handy planing spacer bars for accurate edge trimming. The Carbatec Pro Stand features box section legs and bolted construction making it solid and stable. There is provision for storage of the included mitre gauge assembly.

A five piece set of router table inserts are available, with the standard insert having a 38mm inside diameter.

New look, new code, same great machine! We have updated the look & product code of our CTEX-21CEC (now SS-530C), however be assured, all specifications of this machine are the same as our beloved CTEX-21CEC.

The Carbatec Scroll saw has been at the forefront of scroll saw technology for many years. The model is synonymous with excellence in design and execution.

Carbatec is very proud to have this machine in our scroll saw offering. Unlike other scroll saws, these machines have a tilting upper and lower arm instead of a tilting table. The operator can keep their natural stance for greater control; accuracy and safety.

Features:
- Top arm lifts vertically away from the blade to allow threading of the blade through the workpiece.
- Quick blade changes with finger operated blade clamps; no tools required.
- Head tilts 45 degrees left and right; tilting the blade; not the table; keeping the work piece level for better control and more accurate cuts.
