ToolPRO Outside Micrometer

This outside micrometer boasts a measurement range from 0 to 25mm. Measurement can be taken all the way to 0.01 of a millimetre accuracy. Use it for a precise measure of brake rotor thickness – or any flat, cylindrical or spherical objects. Knowing the name of each part will help you understand your micrometer. The frame is the base of the whole tool, with the spindle, and the anvil at the top. The ends of the spindle and anvil form the measuring faces. The sleeve is the part which displays whole and half millimetre measurements. The thimble rotates around this as the spindle moves in and out. On the end is a ratchet and a locking lever sits on the side of the frame. Before taking a measurement, it’s important to clean the measuring faces. Gently close the micrometer on a clean piece of paper, then slowly pull it out.

Now twist the ratchet until the spindle touches the anvil, and the ratchet clicks. The mircrometer should measure zero here, but if this is not the case – lock the spindle firmly in place and use the included wrench to rotate the sleeve until the zero lines up. Now that it’s cleaned and zero’d, it’s time to take a measurement. Place the item to be measured in the frame of the tool and rotate the thimble until the spindle nears the surface to be measured. Now use the ratchet to close the spindle in until the ratchet clicks. At this point, you can take the measurement – or lock the spindle, remove the micrometer and then read the measurement. The top row of markings on the sleeve are whole millimetres, the bottom row are half millimetres – and the markings on the thimble are one hundredth of a millimeter. To determine an accurate reading, take the number of whole millimetres, add the half millimetre if applicable – then add the number on the spindle. Place a drop of machine oil on the spindle once in a while, keep it safe from knocks in the nifty little storage case – and your ToolPRO Outside Micrometer will deliver accurate measurement for years to come.

Features

  • Precisely measures the thickness of cylindrical, spherical and flat objects such as brake rotors
  • Easy to read
  • Sets the measurement for accurate reading
  • Ensures constant force when measuring
  • 0-25mm range
  • Sleeve reading divided into 0.50mm increments
  • Thimble reading divided into 0.01mm increments

Note From Nighthawk this is a very cheap small Outside Micrometer, and to be fair while it is okay for what I use it for I would not use it for absolute accuracy etc.

Where have I been in 2023?

A couple of things that took their toll on me this year 2023 first of all my pride and joy Ducati was stolen and then it was written off by the thief. This hurt and as it was my pride and joy and I have not replaced it as of yet with another motorcycle and I don’t know when or if I will… (I will I love and I mean love riding)

My Ducati 2002 ST4s in her fully glory and with the after market gizmos etc.

Thief crash it and did a runner… (Though eventually being caught and sentenced…) it still hurts to see this.

Then not long after this we had to put our puppy (10 year old Jack Russell) Rimu down as she developed a heart problem. And those that are dog lovers know that this is equal to one of the family. Rimu was a special dog and I miss her dearly.  The thing here was it was so sudden and we were hoping for at least another 3 or 4 years before we had to start worrying about this. Alas was was not meant to be. Rimu develop a heart issue.

I just stopped going down to the basement, I just plodded on at work, and to be completely honest it had built up over the last few years… Starting with put cat down, they the Ducati being knocked over which I rebuilt, Then my dad passing, Sister dying of cancer, then mom passing Ducati being stolen, having to put puppy down, Ducati being written off plodding on with work which I am not really happy at anymore, it all started to build up and I was not in the right head space to face doing YouTube.

I even admitted to myself that since Rimu and the bike I didn’t want to face my work shop basement … Thing is though that Rimu rarely came and stayed in the Basement while I was doing stuff.

My better half did notice this change and basically said I need another dog after 4 to 6 weeks, even though Rimu was Our/Her dog Rimu was special to both of us. This being said I would like to introduce to Mitre who Our/my puppy and is at the time of writing a nine month old Fox Terrier.

Mitre is Our/My puppy and he is my shadow and basically just follows me everywhere…  Love him to death and my partner sees and keeps saying that I needed another dog. Mitre has a special spot in my heart it was a amazing how quick he stole that spot… Will Mitre be a workshop dog?… while I like the idea, I will most likely say no because of a couple of reasons;

  • Dust: if I need to wear a mask when making dust I not going make Mitre be there with out one.
  • Noise: the hi-pitch sound of certain tools and extractors etc is not good for dogs if I have to wear ear protection and can’t get my puppy to wear any who has more sensitive hearing…
  • Smells: With dog’s sensitive sense of smell and with all the chemicals and dust, laser fumes etc I don’t expect any dog should have to put up with that.

Now this does not mean he will never be in videos or never be in the basement but don’t expect to see him always in the background etc.

I am now feeling better or in the right head space to start doing video’s again soon…however I have to deal with Xmas and new year first. It will take a bit to get going and get my limited followers back (Even YouTube said I am no longer monitised as I have engaged in x number of months) so there is a bit of work a head of me… on-wards and upwards…

Edit: Just as I write this I found out that my nephew, youngest son of my sister that passed away due to cancer committed suicide just last night 16 days out from Xmas. It hasn’t really hit me yet, but I was wondering when the third shit thing would hit for this year.

Well, I was wondering what the third shit thing that was for me to go through this year was going to be…Well Shit … swear curse mutter mutter… here we are… The signs are damned near impossible to read.

Sister who passed due to cancer… and my nephew who took his own life following his life battles.

Please and especially at this time of year… it can be hard for some and harder for others… if you are feeling depressed, alone, hurt need someone to just listen, a shoulder to cry on or what ever please reach out before you do something drastic because all suicide does is just makes it harder for those that you leave behind.
My door is always open to my friends and family if they need me, and when I say always I do mean always. Coffee, bourbon, while I may not always be able to come to aid due to distance/I just as broke, or my own circumstances etc, but I can listen offer some advice, we can have coffee or bourbon or whatever just to get you back into the right head space…

Jobmate Work Bench

Yes I know I bought this and I also know it is very cheap… which means I also know parts of it are not the best like the vice, draw slides could be better and odd size dog holes. That being said why did I buy it?

I saw one made up in Mitre 10 and gave it a good looking over. It was pretty stable, and well made for the price of only $350.00 NZD to me that was cheap. It was cheap but it wasn’t too nasty. So I decided to purchase one. Mitre10 Jobmate Kitset Workbench. There is a difference between cheap and nasty and just cheap.

Jobmate Workbench Kit set. https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/kitset-workbench—h:-865mm,-w:-1525mm,-d:-510mm/p/394483

Multi-use workbench, made from solid rubberwood timber. Suitable for all DIY enthusiasts and professional workshops.
  • Includes three drawers and one storage shelf
  • Easy to assemble kit set with all fastenings
  • Vice opening 185mm.Measurements: H: 865mm, W: 1525mm, D: 510mm

While they recommend having some one to help you put it together it is entirely possible to do it on your own as I did but I didn’t do it in the recommend way the instructions say. I also assembled it in cramped conditions adding that extra layer of difficulty, but definitely possible to do on your own.

Once everything is tightened up the bench itself is surprisingly pretty sturdy. However for me it is a little low, but that is not a problem to sit it up on some leg extension blocks.

The Dog holes appear to be 17-18mm instead of the average19mm which I can fix and I just buy new size dogs and accessories. (that being said there is no standard size dog… but it is more of an average.) The holes just empty into the draws below so your draw will get full of dust.

Like I said above the draw slides are not the best but they work and I possibly could change them in the future if I really want nice sliding draws etc. But to be completely honest I probably won’t ever get round to it.

The end vise is not the best (and this is where they really skimped on the money) but will it will do the job? … most likely will b able to handle what I throw at it (I am not sure if I can change out the vice or some how install a better one on the other end.

So am I happy with it, time will tell how well it will hold up to my abuse, but for $350.00 NZD it is not a bad deal and so far it is okay. Actually ore than okay. But just don’t expect the best quality vice, or draw pulls etc.

Festool

Wacky Wood Works is going to dark side.

First of all, I bought all my tools with my own hard earned money. (Except where stated ie; one of my laser levels and one Systainer)

So why have bought Festool, and why am I planning of the possibility on buy other Fetool tools, like the Domino and at least one of their sanders.  While I have the Accu-Cut track system from Kreg it is not really a proper track saw.

There are more Con’s than Pro’s to it compared to a dedicated Track Saw;

  • Since you have to set up your circular saw to the face plate that rides the track.
  • There is a bit of movement on the track.
  • When you re put your saw on the sled there is a chance you don’t completely align it properly to your preset.
  • The sled itself takes away a few MM’s from your cut depth.
  • Also while it will work with most circular saws, but not all. And to be fair the clamping system on the sled it is a little bit flimsy.
  • Dust collection is only as good as your circular saw… which to be fair most circular saws are not the best.

However it is most definitely usable and workable and if you only need it for breaking down stock it is probably all you need. However if you need more accurate cuts or better dust collection then going to a dedicated track saw system is probably the better option. (whether Makita, Milwaukee, DeWalt, Festool or what ever etc…)

Festool TS 60 KEBQ Plus FS 168mm Brushless Plunge Cut Track Saw With 1.4 Metre Guide Rail.

Festool CTM 26 E M Class Dust Extractor

I choose Festool as I got the Tracksaw on a bit of a special and free shipping. It was originally a toss up between Milwaukee & Festool and the special as well as the free shipping which did it for me. Yes over all it is going to be more expensive, but as I was always going to buy a Festool Extractor it also made sense to buy the track saw as well and eventually a sand and Domino as they just work together.

Just after purchased and delivered. I am saying to myself. I can’t believe I bought Festool.

In my small shop I have been struggling with dust collection and buying into Festool system the dust extractor just works with their tools ie; track saw, sanders, domino, dropsaw etc.

There are a few other niceties that Festool tools have quality and just some of the small things that they do or have that their competitors don’t have. When you buy into a system and things just start working together it just makes life so much easier.
